outsiders book questions

Chapter 3
Determine what the real difference is between social classes - specifically soc's and greasers.  Which would you rather be?  Why?  Cite textual evidence
The greasers live in kind of run down places and all live in one area and the socs live in a big area and dont have switchblades and they jump the greasers and the greasers either travel in packs or go separately but smart.

Chapter 4
Sketch out the "crime scene" in the park
Water all over the fountain and blood pouring out of a dead body and stab wound in the victim

Location, weapons, etc.
The greasers area in the middle of their park, weapon- switchblade

Who should be charged with what crime(s)?
Johnny- Killer
Ponyboy- Witness, Victim

Who would be accomplices and witnesses?
Johnny, ponyboy, and the other socs that weren’t killed

What was each person's role in the incident?
Johnny: murderer
Ponyboy: Victim and was almost killed:
Socs: 1 Killed the rest Fled in terror
What weapons were present, etc.
Hands and Switch blade

  1. What did Johnny buy at the store?
-paperback copy of Gone with the Wind, baloney, two loaves of bread,
a box of matches,Peroxide, deck of cards

  1. Describe how the boys changed their appearances.
-Johnny cuts his hair and washes the grease out, Pony boy cuts his hair and dies it a different color

  1. How did Ponyboy and Johnny pass the time at the church?
-They read gone with the wind and played cards

  1. What was the cause of Ponyboy’s illness on the 5th day at the church?
-smoking with an empty stomach

  1. How do you think Soda and Darry are feeling about Ponyboy being gone?
-Sad because Soda wrote him a letter saying they were wondering where he is

  1. What does Dally tell the boys about home?
-Socs are having wars, and Two Bit got jumped

  1. Who is the spy Dally tells Pony about?
-Cherry

  1. What are the results of Dally’s visit with the war council?
-If Soc’s win, everything goes on like normal. If Greaser’s win, the Soc’s have to stay off of their territory.
Put yourself into the story as a friend of Ponyboy's

Consider the family dynamics of Pony, Darry, and Soda up through chapter 7.  Give Pony some advice on his relationship with Darry and the relationship of all three boys.  Consider Pony's current situation and scare about the uncertainty of his future.
“Hey, just bear with Darry. He cares about you and is worried about you and Johnny. He knows how close you guys were. Keep Soda and Darry close. The three of you are family and you gotta look out for each other.”

Additionally, give Pony some advice on what's going on with Johnny.  Consider what Johnny's fate could be and how Pony may feel about the end result.  How can you make him feel better without giving him false hope or making a promise you can't keep.  What should he do in the immediate future?  What advice can you offer to make him feel better about what's going on.
"Pony, go and visit Johnny. See how he's doing. Then get some revenge. Beat up a couple of Soc's. Let them know that it isn't okay to mess with your brothers. Avenge Johnny. Then visit him again. Make sure he stays alright."

Create a definition of a hero as a group.  Analyze Johnny and Ponyboy - how do they fit as heroes?  Defend your answer with evidence from the book from their actions and inferences on who they are.
Heroes are people who risk their lives for others. They are selfless and don't care about the consequences their actions have as long as they’re keeping others safe. Ponyboy and Johnny are heroes because they selflessly ran into a burning church to rescue the kids who were stuck in the back, nearly losing their lives in the process. Although they are part of a gang, they care about others and aren't afraid to risk their lives for the lives of others.

Johnny is currently in bad condition. The doctors don’t think he’s going to make it and he passed out when he was talking to Ponyboy and Two-Bit. Pony and his brothers are slowly fixing their relationship so they won’t have to go to different boy homes. (Orphanages.) The rumble is still on but Randy and Cherry don’t want in on any part of it.

Create an argument for why we should have a Greaser/Soc day.  Not just that it would be fun, but what academic benefits would such a day offer you as a learner.
Having a Greaser/Soc day will help us to understand the different sides better and make us more interested in the book and how life was like back in 1960’s.

Chapter 10
Create a definition of gallant.
a person who is brave and is selfless
Is being gallant the same as being a hero?  Why or why not?
No because being a hero is putting your life on the line and being gallant is being brave for someone

Cite evidence from the text showing how Dally was gallant.   Decide if these actions also make him a hero or not and explain.
Dally Always got what he wanted and was probably the bravest of all the greasers

Chapter 11
Describe Pony's recovery.  What was wrong with him?  Who came to visit him?  What was significant about some of his visitors?  What is the current standing of Pony and Darry's relationship?
Pony's recovery wasn't going too well. Although he's no longer sick, he believes that he killed that Soc and that Johnny isn't dead. He's kind of messed up in the head at this moment. Randy came to visit Ponyboy. That was important because Randy's a Soc. As of right now, Pony and Darry have a pretty good relationship going on right now. They're getting along and Pony can see that Darry cares for him a lot.

Chapter 12
Describe the outcome of Pony's hearing.  Do you agree or disagree with the outcome?
What do you learn about the purpose of the book and point of view in this chapter?

Pony got to stay with his brothers after the hearing. I agree with the outcome because Pony needs his brothers and his brothers need him in order to live a normal life. I learned that the purpose of the book is to explain the differences in social groups and to tell people not to judge others so quickly. The entire book was part of Pony's homework assignment, so the entire book was just Pony writing everything down like they happened for school.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione had went to see Xenophilius love-good to find out what a certain symbol meant. Mr. Lovegood had told them it was the the sign of the deathly hallows, and together they make the master of death. Hermione had read the tales of the 3 brothers and how they got the deathly hallows to begin with. The first Brother got a wand that would beat any other wand in the world. The 2nd brother got a stone that would bring back the dead. The final brother got an invisibility cloak. This reminded me when I did some chores for my mom and she gave me McDonalds in return for what I did.

Harry had used Voldemort's name and death eaters had surrounded him, Ron and Hermione. The 3 were searched and the death eaters thought they found different people other than Harry, Ron and Hermione. When the death eaters had found a newspaper in the tent they thought it was Hermione because of the picture that was in it. The death eaters brought Harry, Ron and Hermione to the Malfoy manner where they will summon the dark lord to kill harry and his friends. This reminds of how I had to go to place where I didn't want to go and my parents forced me to go with them.

The Giver

Chapter 1
• What do you imagine it means when someone is “released”?
- They are sent off into the wilderness to die and never return to the community
• What are some clues that Jonas’s community is different from
the one in which you live?
-We don’t have to apologize in front of a classroom and make it seem like a speech. We have animals and the book doesn't
Chapter 2
• How would you feel not to have your own individual birthday?
-I wouldn't like it, because I want my own day instead of having to share with everyone.
• If you were attending the Ceremony of Twelve with Jonas, what Assignment do you think the Elders would select for you?
bike-smith because I like working with cars and there’s no cars in this world so bikes are the next best thing.
-Pilot in training, because I love airplanes and want to be a pilot.
Chapter 3
*What did Jonas notice about the eyes of Gabriel?  What significance could this mean for Jonas?
-He noticed that his eyes were pale, and since he was a different baby, and Jonas’s sister said that it’s eyes were just like his, so maybe he was different as a baby too.  He also mentioned that all of the other people in the community had dark eyes.
• How would you feel to be watched all the time, the way Jonas is?
-I would be creeped out, and I wouldn’t want to be in the community if they were watching me all of the time.

• Do you think it says something about Jonas that he sees the
apple change?  Explain.
Yes because he talks about with Asher and Asher notices the same thing about the apple.

Chapter 4
• Jonas’s community has a lot of rules.  Explain some of the rules and what you think the purpose for them are.
Your not allowed to have a bike under the age of 8
You have to change who you are at certain ages and wear different outfits at certain ages
-You are not allowed to brag because people who brag may think of themselves as better that all of the other, and could be seen as a threat.
Do you think the rules are a good thing or a bad thing? Why?
-I think that the rules are a bad thing because people can’t be themselves.

What do you think these rules with have to do with the rest of the book?
-I think that Jonas will start to break more and more rules, and eventually he will be released from the community.
Chapter 5
• Why was Jonas embarrassed about telling his dream?
Because he had stirring dreams that showed that he had a crush on Fiona
18• How important is sameness in Jonas’s community? How
important is it in your community?
It doesn't really matter in our community because people are different in many ways and it would be hard to get them to become similar to everyone
In Jonas’s community it starts out the same for every child they have numbers and the numbers give you names and the rules determine who you are and if your misbehaving you are released into the wild.
Chapter 6
What do you think of how families in Jonas’s community are
formed?
I think that the families should be able to have their own children and as many as they want.
Chapter 7
How would you feel if you were in Jonas’s shoes and the Chief Elder skipped right over you when she was making Assignments?
I would be offended and I would probably feel left out.

Harry gets the sword from the frozen pond but is trapped underneath the pond. The horcrux that harry was wearing on his neck was preventing from reaching air. The necklace was then choking Harry and a hand reached down to save Harry. Harry asked who it was because he couldn't see without his glasses on. Harry grabbed his glasses and saw that Ron had came back to help.I can connect because my sister locked me out of the house one time and my brother came and unlocked the door for me to get back in and being relieved of being inside of a warm house and not in the freezing cold.

Harry told Ron that he had to destroy the horcrux once harry had opened it in parlsetongue. The horcrux had opened and the it started to speak in hermione's voice. She was saying that Harry and her were better off together without you around. Ron decided to sprint toward the horcux and destroy it with the sword. this reminds me of when I had to break my Xbox when it was fried and i had to otherwise it would've caught on fire if anybody turned it on

Boy in the striped pajamas article

Bruno, 9 years old, lives in Germany and his father is a Nazi Official. When Hitler gives the orders to father that he has to live Poland for his new job, Bruno's family moves from a 5 story house in Germany, to a 3 story house in Poland.
When Bruno and his family moves to Poland, Bruno doesn't like it at all. He thinks the house is too small and there isn't enough room anywhere. Bruno looks out his window from his room and sees that there is a fence in his backyard. He walks outside to his backyard and to the fence. He finds a small boy on the other side of the fence and he walks to him.
Bruno talks to the boy and asks him, what his name is and asks why he is wearing striped pajamas. The boy replies, "I'm Shmuel and the guards gave everyone these clothes when they took ours." Bruno introduces himself to Shmuel and tells him where he was from but then he moved to Poland because of his family.
Later they become close friends and eventually Shmuel went into Bruno's house to clean dishes with his small fingers. The guard with the family, Lieutenant Kotler, went outside and Bruno asked Shmuel if he was hungry, Shmuel replied yes. Bruno fed him a lot of food because Shmuel wasn't fed a lot of food when he was at the camp. Lieutenant Kotler finds out Shmuel was eating food without his permission and is sent back to the camp.
Bruno and Shmuel didn't get to see each other for days due to the rainy weather and Bruno was worried if Shmuel might have forgotten about him. Bruno waits till the weather is nice and he went to go see Shmuel. Shmuel was still waiting for Bruno at the other side of the fence and they sat down talked for a while. Bruno pointed out that he wished his and Shmeul could play together. Bruno got an idea. Bruno said he would dig a hole to the other side and him and Shmuel could play together. Eventually Bruno makes the hole and they meet. Shmuel found Bruno some Striped Pajamas he could wear so he looked the same as the other
Eventually Bruno and Shmuel were told they had to take a shower. They had to take a shower with all the others in the camp and very soon found out they were being killed with a gas in the showers.

Chapter 16 and 17

Grandmother died. This will impact Father heavily, because they weren't getting along and then she died. Grandmother was disappointed in what Father had become. Medicinal sherries are booze. Mother needs these, because she is depressed. She needs fewer of these now, because they are moving back to Berlin, but Father is staying at Auschwitz. Lt. Kotler gets kicked out of Auschwitz, because of his affair with Mother and his father. Grandmother would hate the flowers from the Fury, because she despises the Holocaust. Gretel is changing, because she is growing more mature and less childish. She also threw all her dolls away. Bruno and Shmuel's friendship is about to end, because Bruno is moving back to Berlin. Mother and Father are continually growing farther and farther. Bruno thought that he looked like Shmuel, because he was extremely thin and skinny. Bruno is going to move back to Berlin, Germany. chapter 14 and 15

Their friendship has blossomed up to this point, because they missed each other when it was raining. Bruno is innocent and naive, because when Shmuel was beaten by Lt. Kotler, Bruno asked if it was his bicycle. Bruno also did not know why Shmuel's hands were skinny and you could see the veins and bones. Mother has been talking less and less to Father and has been talking to Lt. Kotler a lot. Bruno was surprised when he saw Shmuel when he was in the kitchen. He was overcome with joy when he saw his friend. This strengthened their friendship, because now they have a strong mutual hatred for Lt. Kotler

chapter 11,12,13

Chapter 11
One of the details I found about Hitler was that he hated things from other countries, because when Gretel said that she could speak French, Hitler got angry with her. Another detail I found about Hitler was that he had dark brown hair. This is also true. This is the source that I used.
http://www.biography.com/people/adolf-hitler-9340144

Chapter 12
Shmuel does give a correct interpretation of what happened to his family, because the Nazis first made Jews wear the Star of David. Shmuel came home from school to find his mother sewing armbands with the Star of David on them. After this, they were forced to moved on the other side of the Berlin wall and into the ghettos. Shmuel was forced to move into a room with eleven people. The Star of David is generally recognized as a symbol of Judaism. It is known as the Shield of David to the Jewish people. The Swatstika was known as a good luck symbol in the Western Hemisphere before Hitler twisted it to make it the symbol of the Nazi Regime. These are my sources I used.

Chapter 13
Bruno is confused at what is going on, because he says that his Father is a good soldier who wouldn't hurt anybody unless he needed to. Bruno tells himself that he won't disagree with anyone, because he watched Pavel get beaten, but he doesn't realize that the only reason he was beaten was because he was a Jew.
Pavel's hands were shaking under the weight of the plates. He was becoming malnourished. He accidentally spilled wine on Lt. Kotler's lap and he beat Pavel up. Lt. Kotler became nervous about the conversation about his father at dinner. He then beat Pavel to show where his loyalties lie.
